The Northwest London Resource Centre (NWLRC) is the result of a handful of youth who were empowered to advocate for their community needs.  Through youth advocacy, the “Northwest London Resource Centre” became a reality in September 2002. As a neighbourhood resource centre, NWLRC is many things to many people and the Youth Steering Council still play an integral role in the happenings at the resource centre.

The Youth Steering Council is different in size and make-up from year to year but consistently has two youth who serve as co-chairs.  These executive positions also serve on the Board of Directors of the agency and help to maintain the voice of the youth of the community.  Generally, the Youth Steering Council ranges in size from six to twelve and is primarily composed of students who are in secondary school.  The activities of the council include fundraisers, volunteering, taking part in leadership training and raising social awareness regarding various issues.  Specific activities vary depending on the interest of the current youth group.

The 2008 – 2009 Youth Steering Council has been very active in their community.  They have:

  • partnered with the library to implement three Youth Gaming Nights

  • held a fundraiser bake sale

  • participated in youth leadership training at Circle R Ranch

  • held a “carnival” fundraiser at Masonville Mall

  • held a “caramel apple sale” fundraiser at Sherwood Forest Mall

  • participated in the Hyde Park Scarecrow Fest

  • a fundraiser bake sale in Sherwood Forest Mall on March 28th, 2009

  • “Milk Mania” – a community challenge that will run from March 28th, 2009 until April 28th, 2009 in order to raise non-perishable, alternative milk (eg. Powdered milk, boxed milk, soya milk)
